Plantasia – Record Sleeve and Spotify Canvas

All pieces for this project were based off of Mort Garson’s Plantasia album. This album was created in the 1970s as a soundtrack for plants to listen to.

For my GIF for Spotify Canvas, I created a surrealistic painting of a face made out of vines and leaves. From that, I then made it into a blinking GIF and then went on to add more textures to the GIF to make it more interesting.

As for my vinyl sleeves, I photocopied some illustrations of plants out of a book called Art Nouveau Floral Stencil Designs and cut them out. I then glued them onto 12cm x 12cm white card, and hand printed the title, “Plantasia” using letter stamps.

For my second sleeve, I painted the card entirely black and then flicked white paint onto it. I wanted this piece to look like space and to portray that the sunflower was the sun. I also thought it connected with the music as it has quite a cosmic sound to it, and it was based off of the book The Secret Life of Plants by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird, which talks about how plants has a way of speaking to the planets and the stars.
